The kart I will be building will be a one wheel drive (also known as a dead axle) go kart with an adjustable bench seat. I will be building the kart that is easy to build, and is based off common go kart models in years past. The most popular karts are two seat go karts, for kids, and young teens.
I will be showing you how to build a simple yard kart. To keep things simple you can classify most as either a race kart, yard karts, or off-road karts.
There are many different types of go karts. Tools, Parts, Measuring, Cutting the Go Kart Frame My hope is that it will help someone out there that wants to make one too!
I will also make detailed, free, PDF plans of the go kart that I will post on my website on June 1st as well. So without further ado, here is my build guide for a simple two seat go kart. Final edited videos will be posted with photographs of the finished kart on June 1st, 2015. All videos I post will be considered drafts and I need any and all of your help in being critical of what parts need to be changed, removed, and improved upon.
Having restored karts for years, and not finding much excellent, free content online on how to build one from scratch (even the plans I looked for are not free) I am going to give it a stab and would like some input as I go along.
Since joining the forum here a while back, I have always liked helping people out with their questions that I felt I could answer. This will be a concise guide that will cover the following in the final video: I plan on making this something that is geared towards helping anyone that really just wants to make a go kart, but doesn't know where to start. This wont be a pimped out kart, or something dangerously fast, rather, a simple two seater go kart that two tweens could ride in comfortably, or an adult and a child. Herein I will be posting my progress on a go kart build that will show you step by step on how to build your own go kart from scratch. It will take some effort, but it’s nothing you can’t master.Download the PDF of Free Go Kart Plans Here Especially if this is your first go-kart build, following a step-by-step guide is recommended. If you are convinced that you want to tackle a go-kart project, the best way is to find a template with detailed instructions. That will add to the project’s time and costs. Therefore, even though lawn mower engines are often used in go-karts, they may require extreme modifications. A lawnmower engine is most often positioned to operate vertically, but in a go-kart, the engine is normally horizontal. Snowmobile engines are lightweight and provide plenty of power. Motorcycle and ATV motors provide a reverse gear that can be an advantage. Repurposing a motorcycle, ATV, snowmobile or lawnmower engine is common in go-kart builds.
Will the transmission be automatic or manual with a clutch? Repurposing an Engine You’ll also have to determine if you want your go-kart to be chain-driven or use a transmission. Speaking of horsepower, engine characteristics like torque and RPMs need to be considered. Gas runs longer and provides more horsepower. Gas engines require fuel, but refilling is faster than recharging. Electric engines can burn cleaner but for a shorter amount of time. For instance, do you go with a gas or electric car? Each has its pros and cons. Even smaller engines can be quite complex. Obviously, the engine will be the main component of the vehicle, and deciding on one poses a truly a difficult set of choices. A set square will ensure precision, and a few clamps will make things easier. Additionally, any build will require various wrenches, a hammer, a file, and a screwdriver.
If you choose not to weld the frame, an angle grinder plus a drill with a large bit and a hole saw will be needed to cut and shape the metal. If you’re not a welder, the welding can be outsourced. In many cases, instructions on how to build a go-kart will include welding.
The drivetrain includes the drive shaft, steering wheel, braking system, and pedals. The main components will be the framework, an engine, and the drivetrain. Many are free and offer invaluable information from experienced go-kart enthusiasts. Although you can create your own design, there are many customizable templates available online. Next, decide on the size, shape and speed capabilities you desire from the vehicle. For go-karts, there are resources you can go to for a detailed guide to planning your project. Before starting on your build, it’s wise to form a clear concept that includes a list of materials required and any tools that will be needed.
